HISTORY
Manipal is a university town which is situated in the rocky hinterland on the coasts of Malabar. It is at a distance of 8 km from the Arabian Sea. The name is deduced from Mannu which means mud and palla means lake in Tulu language.
It is situated a few kilometres from the temple city of Udupi, and is 60 km (37 mi) north of Mangalore. Parkala is one of its residential areas. Manipal was previously under Shivalli village panchayat. It is a center of academic learning, healthcare, industry and finance.
Manipal was a bare wasteland, a laterite hilltop covered with scrub and bush. Six decades ago, a great visionary Dr T.M.A. Pai, a country doctor changed the face of the hill top with his vision. Manipal came into forefront in the 1950s, when Dr. T.M.A. Pai, transformed this barren hillock into today’s world-famous university town. He built a bustling township called Manipal. Today, Manipal is a renowned Center for center of academic learning, healthcare, industry and finance
Manipal provides a captivating view of the Arabian Sea to the west and the Western Ghats range to the east. Manipal is a region of great natural beauty. Its pristine beaches and lush greenery provide a serene backdrop for all those who are pursuing their education.
The climate is humid and warm between November and May, and wet and cool during the monsoon months of June to October. It has a tropical climate characteristic of coastal plains in western India. Manipal, being located on an elevated place near the seashore, has a fine breeze throughout the day and the temperature ranges from 24°C to 38°C for most part of the year. The rainfall amounts to about 260-300 inches/year mainly during the monsoon months of June to October.
